New Math Unit

Dear Parents,

We will start our new Unit 2 in Math: Problem Solving with Units of Measure very soon.

Memorization is NOT a goal in the case of vocabulary words and multiplication facts. We encourage you to discuss the ideas and concepts through hands-on activities and conversations (in the home language) about how we use math in our daily lives. 

We encourage to make connections and have conversations in your home language to help understand the concept.

In this unit students will: 

• Investigate, understand, and use place value to manipulate numbers.
• Build on understanding of place value to round whole numbers.
  
  
• Continue to develop understanding of addition and subtraction and use strategies and properties to do so proficiently and fluently.
• Solve elapsed time, including word problems, by using a number line diagram.
• Solve word problems involving masses or volumes

VOCABULARY

Visual Mathematics Online Dictionary: This resource includes definitions, pictures, examples, and related words for mathematical vocabulary. 

1. Addend: A number that is added to another in an addition problem
2. Addition: To join two or more groups. 2 + 3 = 5
3. Difference: The answer to a subtraction problem. In 8 – 3 = 5, 5 is the difference
4. Elapsed Time: A measurement of the amount of time from one event to another
5. Mass: A measure of how much matter is in an object.
6. Measure: Use of standard units to find out size or quantity in regard to length, height, area, mass, volume, time, perimeter
7. Subtraction: To find the difference when two groups are compared or to find out how many are left when items are taken away from a group.
8. Sum: The answer to an addition problem. In 2 + 3 = 5, 5 it is the sum.
9. Time: Seconds, minutes, hours, days, months, years, and so on. Time is shown on a clock or calendar.
10. Volume: The amount of space occupied by an object.

ACTIVITIES AT HOME

-Make records of important times of the day (wake-up, dinner, going to school, getting home from school, etc.) and practice telling how long between activities.

-Calculate elapsed time by finding out how long it takes to complete daily activities (soccer practice, homework, take a shower, etc.)

-Fill a small box with blocks (e.g., sugar cubes) to determine its volume. 

-Brainstorm multiple strategies to determine the volume.
